Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   The much-discussed white clay layer excavated as context 5499 should have been taken prior to ashy layer 5489, which was found, upon excavation, to underlie it. It is earlier than pit cut 5498, though, defining its S and E edges.
Excavation of the context revealed that the white continued downward for quite a ways. It overlay a softer, darker surface with many more cobble and stone inclusions, which ran atop a newly exposed harder surface to the S.
Something to update for context 5489 (the ash lens deposit) is that the white layer overlying that context (previously thought to underlie it) is actually a different hard white surface, and is not the same as the white clay surface. The N and NW edges of the pit were almost entirely leveled by the removal of 5499. The W edge of the pit remains high and the edges of its termins remain more diffuse there, so that will be the next area explored.
16.05.08: We changed our interpretation of the additional hard, white layer mentioned above (thought to be the same, then thought to be different). We have had second thoughts and have posited a new possibility that contexts 5499 and 5512 are the same, representing a homogenous layer of compacted white fill stretching all the way to N-S wall 71 and filling and running over pit cut 5478.
