Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context was revealed following the excavation of fill 5494. It is a reddish colored sandy soil that has been cut by the pit cut 5498. It was divided from context 5503 by stones, which were removed as part of that context. It may be the same as fill 5503, however.
The border between pit cut 5498 and context 5500 is interesting because the pickman has interpreted the edges as stepped. It is uncertain as to whether this reflects method of excavation (i.e., hand pick) or the actual cut edge. The extent of the red context 5500 is not apparent on the surface, since it has been some days since we have excavated in this area. The level actually goes down quite some ways- almost level with the bottom of the pit cut, thus far (this makes sense). The boundary to the E is clear and is reflected in texture- softer close to the E-W running wall 5 (C.K. Williams, 1963, no. 253, p. 26) and harder to the N of that. The context took the form of a rectangular strip along Wall 58 when it was finished. To me, the context appears linkable with the soil of Context 5503.
The pickman has speculated that he had the beginnings of a foundation trench coming up near the wall, but this seems unlikely because there is a not a visible continuation to the N, where the context appears to terminate. Instead, a harder level has been exposed, which appears to slope moderately to the W. The boundary to the SW is also harder and lighter in color, forming an edge.
There is one more patch that appears to be cut by the pit to the NE (Context 5513, not yet excavated as of 16.05.08). This will be the last part to go, and it was set aside from 5500 after Context 5494 was excavated because it is slightly darker in color than this context- a diffuse boundary. These contexts may be equated as well in the end.
