Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context has been present since the beginning of excavations in this area, and represents fill bounded by four structures: Wall 58 running E-W forms its N edge, Wall 4 running N-S forms its W edge, Wall 5 running E-W forms its S limit, and Wall spur 5478 partially bounds it to the E. The soil appears to be the matrix that lies against and perhaps beneath the large remaining W foundation block of wall spur 5478. Context 5503 is also cut by 5498 on its NW edge, though the boundary for the cut is diffuse in that area. It may simply be the case that the fill of this context was looser than the clay context 5499 forming the E and NE edge of the pit cut 5498.
After excavating approximately 0.05 m of soil near the intersection of Wall 4 and Wall 5 (numbers from C. Williams, 1963, no. 253, pp. 11 and 26), we discovered a rectangular shaped projection of hard consistency, with the loose, red soil matrixof 5503 continuing around it. The limits of the rectangular projection of harder consistency are the edges of lower levels of former pit cut 5498. (but see addendum from 20.05.08)
The pickman has suggested that the distinction that he sees in the consistency of the two soils is indicative of a cut for a N-edge foundation trench for Wall 5. However, upon examination and excavation to the SE-most extent of the reddish layer 5503, we realized that a thick clay band was visible in the soil profile spanning both the soft and the firm pocket; if there was a foundation trench excavated there, it would be visible in profile.
To the very N of context 5503, bounded by walls 58, 4, and the remaining block of 5478, the bottom of the final block was discovered resting on the newly-exposed surface. It, along with two other loose stones, were collected. Pottery underlying the loose stones was also taken together with this context.
20.05.08: ADDITIONAL NOTE
The hard rectangle is now thought to be a continuation of layers 5516 and 5515, since it contains the same fine clay that defined context 5516 and matches up roughly in elevation with these layers. While cleaning in that area, subsequent to the removal of context 5503, a coin was uncovered near the SW most point to the N of wall 5. The soil matrix around it had been freshly troweled, so it seems safe to include it as part of this context rather than assuming that it would be a contamination or that it would belong to the next context. It is important for establishing a terminus post quem for the deposit of fill into which pit 5498 was cut.
