Title:   Fill of failed robbing trench for wall 5519
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5520
Page:   0
Date:   2008/05/16
Stratum:   10% total inclusions: 5% tile, 5% fine pebbles to cobbles, rounded to angular and spherical
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Scraping of the soil in this area revealed this possible foundation trench of 5519 filled with soft, greyish soil. It is bounded on the east by wall 5483, the top of which was revealed by cleaning. It is cut on the west by 1960s excavation. If it is a foundation trench, the rest of this trench was removed by the 1960s excavations. It is possible that this fill cuts the highest stratum of the martyr which is the stratum immediately north of 5502, but it is unclear because we don't know if the edge of this martyr represents an archaeological cut or an arbitrary cut made by the 1960s excavations. We chose to dig this greyish fill (5520) first because it seems likely that it cut the highest visible stratum, but it is always possible that that stratum once continued over fill 5520. We are currently unsure if there is a foundation trench along wall 5483 (it may be revealed in the central part), but if there is, it seems that 5520 cuts it.
Panos has reached the bottom of this fill by hitting much harder soil. The fill stops at the bottom of the large rock comprising the top layer of 5519, but robbing trench 5511 shows that the wall goes deeper than out fill, so our fill may not be a foundation trench. We may need to remove more layers of the martyr to reveal the rest of the trench. Scraping along the scarp of martyr shows that the cut does not continue further to the west. The bottom of our cut (5522) is a hard packed level which extends west, it is probably a floor. Therefore our fill (5520)/cut (5522) is bounded at bottom by a floor, level with bottom of top course of wall 5519, and bounded at west by an imaginary line in line with western end of big block of 5519. The eastern boundary of this fill is in line with eastern edge of same rock. This cut may have been dug with the explicit purpose of robbing out this block.
