Category:   Cut

Context:   5673

Date:   2008/05/28
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are mixed. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: truncated at west by circular pit for well #2 (NB 230), truncated at east by wall 5649.
Notes:   Cut 5673 is a long sub-rectangular strip that partially revealed the tops of the stones lining the drain with fill 5657. Because the cut does not completely uncover all of the lining stones on the north, it would appear that it was made to reach something inside the drain, perhaps in preparation to clean it out or rob out a pipe inside. This cut 5673 appears to be the western continuation of contexts 5288 and 5289, which cover the eastern extent of the drain. 5288 and 5289 are parts of a wider cut above the drain and the broader width may be due to excavation. The extent of the cut from the excavation pit for well #2 at the west and the wall 5649 at the east is 3.85m.
The edges of the cut 5673 were discovered by the removal of the fill in several contexts. The fill was excavated on April 19th by L.A.K. and J.G. in deposit contexts 5288 and 5289; the rest of the fill was excavated on May 26th by J.E.A.C. These fills are likely part of the same fill. However, the shape of the cut reflects slight differences that seem to have been produced by excavation rather than being reflective of a difference from one end of the cut to the other: The segment that was exposed on 26-5-08 has sloping sides that do not quite reveal the horizontal extent of the stones that line the drain. The section of the cut exposed on April 19th, however, has vertical sides and to the north the stones that line the drain are completely uncovered.
