| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. | |
| Notes: | This context was excavated in order to remove backfill from excavation undertaken during the 20th cent. With the removal of this deposit, the western side of the context revealed a deep running N-S wall. It is possible that the slight difference in orientation might indicate a different wall altogether. The removal of 5689 also revealed the western extent of pit cut 5629. It appears that our pickman mistook the compaction in this area as being the edge of the cut of 5629 rather than a fill. With the removal of 5689, fill could still be seen within the cut, east of 263.13 E. This remaining fill will be removed in a different context (5700) but will be equal to the other fill contexts (5614, 5662) of pit 5629. Approximately .35 m dowm from the uncontaminated surface revealed by 5608, a constructed floor made of 3 marble tiles along with the cement subfloor that bonds these tile was discovered. It is possible that this marble floor may be the same floor that appears in the scarp around the roof tile-built pithos (5504). This newly discovered marble floor was given a structure number 5710. | |
