Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the W. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5704 is a layer of soft fill with many large inclusions under the ashy fill 5699. Its excavation seems ot have revealed a more distinct cut for the pit on the east end and more along the wall. This second deposit is not ashy like 5699 and has different kinds of inclusions, and now seems ot extend beyond the east end of the pit under the current surface. So, the cut for the pit may have been more to the west, making the pit less elongated at the east end, and we dug past it. A second pass has shown that in fact the tiley fill is part of an earlier dumped fill that is cut by the later pit 5702 5704 appears to extend under another fill at the east end of the pit that was revealed by the removal of 5699.
Deposit 5704 appears to be one in a sequence of differentiated fills inside the pit that abuts wall 5463 and meets the outside edge of the stones that form the south side of the drain in the courtyard. After the removal of the first lens of fill (ash 5699) three different fills were discernable. Although the pit fill 5704 began at the highest elevation banking the cut ot the east, it is earlier than both the hard ash lens (5705) and the reddish fill (5716), as it continues underneath both lenses. Exacvation of these fills was enacted out of sequence, such that 5704 was begun, before it was realized that 5705 and 5716 were sitting on top. Exacvation of the fill context 5704 was interrupted to remove both these differentiated lenses of fill, and resumed thereafter. Excavation of these fills has revealed lower courses of wall 5463, east of the rock with the doorjamb cutting.
