Description:   Top slope of the context is slight. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are removing this floor to fully expose the lower floor (5733) directly underneath. We will then remove the lower floor (5733) in search of a foundation trench underneath. Floor 5707 is bounded on the north by wall 5552 and south by wall 5403 but the western edge is jagged and probably reflects crumbling of the floor in the western part of the room (the eastern part of the floor is cut by a bathros dug in the 1960s- Berg NB 229 p. 152). Removal of this floor (5707) is revealing more of the lower floor 5733, and in places goes all the way down to a third floor ( ). The third floor ( ) is distinguished from the second (5733) because it is darker and contains bits of charcoal and ash. The second floor (5733) contains some tile. We will excavate floor 5733 next.
Floor 5707 is cut by later wall 5552. We compared records on this floor to floors on the north side of wall 5552 (floors are from highest to lowest: 5632, 5642, 5650, 5659). The soil matrix is similar to 5659, the earliest floor already excavated north of wall 5552, but floor 5707's top elev. Is 0.20 m low3er than the top elev. Of the lowest floor (5659) on the other side of the wall. Also, floor 5659 was 0.22 m deep and floor 5707 is 0.13 m deep. Therefore we are probably already lower on the south side of wall 5552 than all four floors north of wall 5552. Further excavation north of wall 5552 may uncover the floor level that matches up with floor 5707.
