Stratum:   15% inclusions: roof tile fragments (most on the surface), pottery, cobbles: angular/spherical and angular/tabular and rounded/spherical; no bone.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this context to get a better understanding of the various interfaces relating to 5712, namely pit 5629 and foundation trench 5714. 5712 is dumped debris containing roof tile fragments (lying at angles) and mixed cobbles scattered across the upper most portion of the context. Below this initial blanket of cobbles and roof tiles, the frequency of these materials decreases. Once the context was excavated and the tiles were counted and weighted (70n=27.kg) and their arrangement at various angles in the soil matrix was noted, we concluded that 5712 was most likely dumped debris, and possibly leveling fill.
To the east of the context at 264.90 E, 5712 abruptly ends. The soil of the depost east of 5712 has a completely different appearance, lacking the rubble debris being the most distinctive difference. Reasons for this abrupt termination of 5712 in the east may be made more clear with further excavation. At this point, it appears that both 5712 and perhaps the contexts underlying it have been disturbed.
5712 revealed a hard floor-like surface distinct from 5712. Some flat lying pottery and fragmented roof tile are visible with the floor's soil matrix. Whether or not this floor continues to the east are next goal. As mentioned above, however, it appears that the deposits interfacing with 5712 to the east have been disturbed.
In reference to the large pit (5629) and the foundation trench (5714) that were cut into 5712, it seems that both the cutting of the pit and the foundation trench appear to be contemporaneous actions prior to the laying down of the floor-like surface of 5608.
