Notes:   This well or built pithos was discovered during the excavation of context 5558, a soft ashy fill that was found to overlie and lie within the well head. The ashy fill itself is thought to have been revealed during the excavation of context 5513, although it was actually defined while cleaning. Because we have not excavated further than the first fill within the structure, we have not yet determined what its function was. It will be referred to as a well for the present, since its sides appear vertical at this time, rather than fanning out at the bottom. The well can be roughly dated by stratigraphic relationships.
The ambiguity of the well cut's starting point (i.e., the contexts overlying it and the topmost level that it cuts) makes the establishment of a definitive period of use difficult. If it is 5512 that overlies the well head, then the TAQ for the well's period of use is the 3rd quarter of the 13th century on the basis of pottery. If it is context 5537 that overlies the well head, then the TAQ is closer to the 2nd half of the 13th century.
There is some contention about where the well cut begins. The excavators have interpreted it as cutting the level exposed as of 08.06.08, but G.S. has suggested that the cut must start much higher in the soil matrix. If it cuts the level exposed as of 08.06.08, then that context will give a TPQ for the construction.
The fills within the well give rough TPQs for the well going out of use. These include fill 5558, which has pottery as late as the middle of the 13th century. Because of the mixed nature of fill, however, it is possible that later pottery could be found which would push the date of the well's termination later.
