Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is stongly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   It has taken the excavation of many contexts to fully understand the sequencing of the four robbing events that relate to the E-W wall 5725 and the N-S wall that preceded 5743. The excavation of 5844 has presented the following scenario: The deepest robbing trench, which runs irregularly from N-S to the S of Wall 5725, was the earliest event. The martyr that we left during the excavation of contexts 5798, 5808, 5812, 5816, and 5822 (fills of robbing trench) is demonstrably cut by the robbing trench running E-W associated with wall 5725. But when we excavated the context overlying the one we are excavating now (i.e., 5830 and 5837 overlying 5852), we also discovered that the N edge of the E-W cut was not visible until context 5837 was removed.
The fills 5830 and 5387 represent the layer that N-S robbing trench 5791 cuts to the N, and since the fills overlie the N edge of the E-W cut, that means that trench 5791 is later than the E-W cut.
So we hav established that the N and S robbing trenches of the N-S wall are separate events. And their boundaries have been obscured by the single later robbing event, pit cut 5719.
The excavation of this context (5852) revealed the remaining stones of Wall 5725. They are formidable boulders, faced, ca. 0.50 m L x 0.30 m W x 0.30 m H.
The next context will focus on the removal of the martyr to the S, in order to see the true N edge of the first robbing event.
