Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: unworked fieldstones. Material size: cobbles - size: (.19x.14x.13) (.24x.24x.25). Material finish: none. Material construction: roughly coursed. Material bonding: none apparent. Features: 1 reused limestone fragment with rounded cutting.
Notes:   5971 is probably the continuation of 5957, the cobble foundations of the W pier of an arch or post for a doorway. But we decided to change contexts because the soil matrix had changed somewhat - the soil here is more red in color than the previous context and the stones are also significantly larger in size, but are still irregular angular cobbles.
More of these cobbles continue to the west, but those may be a part of a wall extending west. The soil in that area is harder than the soil in this context.
Stones continue down, but our workmen note that the reddish soil of this context is different than the harder grey soil beneath. We changed contexts when we hit this different soil.
