Stratum:   Ceramic sherds (primarily small fragments of tile); stone (small to coarse pebbles; rounded to angular; spherical to tabular); ash/charcoal; bone. 20% inclusions
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 5989 is an intact floor surface of compact earth along the southern side of room north of courtyard in Byzantine house. Currently latest deposit in room making it necessary to excavate next. Does not appear to be cut by foundation trench for wall 38 (=5990) on eastern side of room. Context 5989 abutted tile fill (context 5981) and difficult to determine if one earlier than another.
Because this context is a floor, decided to take 6 samples of 15 l. for flotation.
Also decided to dry sieve the remainder of soil. (70% sieved, 30 % floated)
Context 5989 originally revealed by removal of context 5963.
Soil is dark reddish brown clayey silt with 20% inclusions including ceramic sherds, stones, bones, and ash/charcoal.
Context 5989 produced quantities of bone and scrap metal. Removal of this context did reveal continuation of floor surface which now appears to cover much of surface of this room (also revealed by removal of context 5981). Slight concentration of ash/charcoal visible at western end of context 5989. This context appears to continue until threshold of room in southeast corner, but not beyond into courtyard of Byzantine house.
As removal of context 5989 continued, became more apparent that multiple surfaces revealed beneath.
