Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is very dark reddish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 338 is the fill of a pit west of wall 332 and north of wall 365 that was partially excavated in the 2008 season, and the digging of 338 was stopped arbitrarily due to confusion about the relationship between the fills of the pit and the earlier well structure 348. It is noted that to the east within the pit that cuts the well, there is a blond soil and the arcing course of the wells stones are in situ, though the pit had destroyed the upper courses and the blond soil seems to continue into the scarp of the cut. Based on these observations It is decided that the blond soil represents the bottom of the pit to the west. In the east portion, however there is a black soil, similar to the fill 338 and several cobbles and boulders that appear to be displaced from the well by the pit activity. It is decided t remove this black soil and tumbled stones as deposit context 598 which is in truth the continuation of the pit fill 338. The removal of the fill revealed large boulders that appear to be in situ as elements of the wall of the well, which are ca.0.7m thick. It is noted that there is a very black soil outside of these boulders; it does not seem to be pit fill, but rather backfill of the well after the structure was built, or that the boulders and black soil represent a third disturbance in the area. It decided to close the context and replace the plastic in order not to excavate deeper.
