Notes: | Context 5998 is one of several separated leveling fills in room north of courtyard of Byzantine house. This context in SE corner of room and continues into threshold, but stops at the edge of the courtyard. Excavated at this point to attempt to remove several fills to fully reveal floor surfaces below. Context 5998 only occupies about half of the threshold. Removal of this context revealed redder soil to north and yellower soil beneath. As context 5998 removed, it became clear that it is defined by a cut (context 6000). This context may represent a robbing trench for a threshold block, which had been set into the threshold at an earlier time. | |
