Stratum:   Sandy silt with 20% inclusions (spherical angular fine through medium pebbles, cobbles, platy angular boulders, tile)
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a baulk to the S of foundation 5552 left as a martyr by the 1960s excavations in order to establish the relationship between it and the baulk to the N of the foundation as well as to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. We initially thought the baulk to the E of wall 5965 was related, but this baulk turned out to be an entirely separate schenario (see notes for robbing trench fill 6002). After removing several deposits from the southern baulk we have reached a packed earth floor (deposit 6013) in the interior of the room bound by walls 5965, 5403, 5483, and foundation 5552. We have been excavating the N and S baulks in sequence, hoping to establish their relationship, but so far the relatioship remains unclear. The use of this room is also not clear. Removal of the floor revealed a lower floor (=deposit 6035) partially covered by a layer of ashy soil (=deposit 6017). Removal of deposit 6017 revealed that floor 6035 indeed continued south under the ashy layer, as we expected. The flooer surface included a line of surprisingly large stones (for which see notes on floor 6035 and wall 6025).
