Stratum:   Ceramics, medium pebbles to large stones; worked stones from adjacent wall
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6115 is the accumulated fill of a subterranean Byzantine pithos. It appears to go very deep and contains a lot of ceramic sherds. Thus far, no bone has been recovered. None of the structure itself can be seen. The fill also contains some very large cut stones, which must have fallen in the fill from adjacent wall 10111. This subterranean pithos is comparable to structure 5504 to the NE.
Removal of this context has revealed a clear yellow Frankish stratum in the east, and mixed in with the current context is slumped fill from that stratum.
In this fill was found an intact Ionic marble capital (late Roman): 0.33W; 0.30L; 0.11H, and a basin or mortar: 0.38W; 0.38L; 0.19H (cavity diameter: 0.27 Max.; 0.26 Min.; 0.12D). It became apparent that wall 10111 turns 90 degrees to the north and was cut by this pithos as it was being cut from above.
In the west there is a well-preserved amphora visible through the scarp, which must be dealt with later. It is embedded against wall 10111, and may be from a basement room.
In this fill was a high concentration of ceramic sherds and a few iron nails. About half way through this fill we decided it was worth sieving.
Wall 10111 continues to the full depth of this context and must extend below this level.
Among other noteworthy finds were pieces of eggshell (perhaps an ostrich egg) and a bead recovered from the dry sieve.
The many finds and pottery from this context will hopefully give is a good terminus post quem for this pithos as well as wall 10111, which it cuts. However, the presence of this late-Roman capital show that earlier material may have been introduced.
Context 6115 also revealed the great depth to which wall 10111 goes and the fact that it changes course, turning 90 degrees to the north.
Wall 10111 was found to be continuing east at the bottom of this context, most of its superstructure having been removed for construction of this pithos. A hypothesis, which will not be tested this session, is that wall 10111 continues father north and joins wall 6016 in the adjacent room to the east.
