Stratum:   This soil was a mix of silty sand with about 5-10% clay. There were about 10% inclusions of pebbles, pottery, bone, and tile. The soil was similar in composition to 6168.
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   Context 6164 was excavated as a surface deposit similar in composition to 6168. We have already noted the multiplicity of conacted surfaces that we are dealing with in this area, and the excavation of 6164 confirmed this idea. Beneath the context, we revealed a new surface that was darker in color, with yellow clay pockets and small pockets of ash. We are not yet confident that the ash represents more than simple accumulation in divits within the newly-exposed surface, but there does appear to be continuity with the surface revealed by 6164 and more of the exposed surface to the east- in other words, we initially excavated a small area of surface that rested above one continuous surface. (see hard-copy notes for drawing)
Having revealed that continuous surface, our next move will be to go back to the pebbly surface underlying 6168 to attempt to expose a continuous surface running the entire length, in a similar way that 6168 ran.
Two coins were found, 09-63 at E 274.65, N 1025.39, H. 84.50, and the second 09-64, from the sieve.
This context is contemporary with the threshold 5671, and possibly equal to floor/surface 6168.
Masonry style is indeterminate because only two blocks are preserved. Threshold is level with floor 5649 and probably contemporary, but was still in use with later floor 5650 which goes partially over this threshold. At the beginning of excavation season there was an upright limestone in association with this threshold, to the west of it, but it has since fallen. The upright stone (0.60 x 0.18 x 0.18) was probably part of the door frame for the threshold.
Update 29-04-09 This threshold stone (only one was visible when this stucture was excavated) was removed during the excavation of context 6152.
