Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are excavating surface 6168, which is a deposit of a similar consistency to surface 6164 to the south. Our working hypothesis is that the entirety of the bounded area was once part of an outdoor compacted surface, and that contexts 6164 and 6168 preserve the remainder of that surface, but were cut by the construction of a much later wall, 5552/6120. Cleaning context 6146 and fill 6152 revealed this surface. The context 6168 was excavated separate from its subfloor context in order to separate the compacting event that created 6168 from the filling event that led to the creation of the context below it. The change from the compacted, clayey texture of the surface to the softer, darker fill level beneath [6220] was clear- inclusions within the revealed surface were larger, and included potsherds, cobbles, and large pebbles. Near the threshold 5671, another filling event [6211] was discovered, which included various rounded pebbles; in fact, it appears to run in a north-south line oriented with the threshold 5671. Perhaps the pebbles relate to foot traffic, which would have been heavier near doorways- or, alternatively, if this area is indeed an outdoor space, the pebbles could easily have accumulated as a sweeping event, removing debris from an inner area.
Excavation of 6168 also confirmed that the surface was contemporary with the use of threshold 5671. The soil from this surface ran between the pivot stone and the central threshold block, filling the gaps between them.
One more thing worth noting, post excavation: the "fill" layer that was revealed in the excavation of this context appears to be rather mixed in some places, but in other places it is a lens covering another compacted surface- sometimes, a completely fugitive lens. As we excavate that looser fill later, it should reveal more of the surface and answer the question of whether the surface is similar to the one revealed in the excavation of 6164.
