Context:   623

Date:   2009/06/11
Stratum:   50% inclusions, small-coarse subrounded pebbles, cobbles, roof tile, ceramic, bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit context 623 is a lens of pebbly and chuncky fill. It sits east of the west scarp 255.5 E, and west of drain 426. It is one of several fills that lie between these two features, and are not associated with any walls. Currently, this area appears to be outdoor space.
Deposit 623 is characterized by the high concentration of pottery fragments; and very loose compaction; while several of the fills west of the drain have a high percentage of inclusions, 623 is rich in pottery sherds rather than cobbles and roof tile fragments. The eastern boundary of the deposit is formed be a vertical scarp ??? By a lens of pebbles; these pebbles are related to the deposits cut by the construction of the drain 426. As such it is possible to say that the sequence of fills west of the pebble lens that appears to be truncated are all later than the drain 426.
