Stratum:   20% tile frags, small & medium pebbles (rounded, angular), bone, rounded/angular/platy cobbles, sherds, 0.01-0.03 bits of charcoal
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 6240 was opened to explore the extent of the cut it fills (6241). Fill 6240 also seemed to be the latest deposit /fill in this area so we decided it needed to come out before the others.
We closed 6240 because it appears we have traced the extent of its cut, but the pit/fill might actually be cutting into a prexisting robbing trench beneath it; this is suggested (possibly) by red soil that appears on the east and the west sides of the cut. We closed the context so we could figure out what the deal is with the 'robbing trench.'
Dry sieving revealed more fine ware/glazed ware than we have seen in the other pits so far dug. There were many bones, and many small fragile bones were preserved (e.g. wishbones). The flat-lying quality of the bone collection suggests a secondary deposition but the preservation of the very small bones indicates a good context for presrvation - perhaps the Some chuncks of charcoal preserved the grain of the wood.
Notes added 5.5.09
It now appears that fill 6240 was over-excavated. We cannot say how deep this pit cut went because there was no noticible change in the soil composition or inclusions, but it became clear today, while digging 6255 (fill for rt 6254) that there was, in fact, a pit cutting the upper, northern portion of the rt.
