Name:   Nezi Field, context 639

Title:   Removal of large stones from West Found. Trench
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   639
Page:   0
Date:   2012/04/03
Stratum:   Pottery, tiles, boulders (~40 cm.), cobbles, bone. Inclusions 70 %
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Removal of boulders intruding on foundation trench for wall. Some pottery and tiles and fragments of bones. More tiles near bottom of deposit; more bone at bottom on Eastern edge. 2009 season recorded small pit (629) which was no longer visible. Area immediately south of cut 272 and east of west baulk was excavated as single context immediately around boulders, including deposit inside of C 272 itself (beneath 633). South border of context 639 was determined by change in soil color from light yellowish brown to darker brown/black. Depth of context determined by appearance of large boulder. Boulders removed as context 639 were interpreted as wash/tumble which had fallen into C 272 - possible after C 272 was originally made.
Warning: Top elevation was not taken and is an estimate based on starting elevation for previous context of 633 which was 86.51.
Later Interpretation (23 April 2012): After comparing pottery dates, elevations, top plan, and dates from contexts above 639 from 2009 season, we believe this context should have been excavated as two separate deposits. The 12th cent. Pottery discovered here likely came from the portion of 639 which was excavated to the S of the original line of C272, (The contexts which were laid on 639 [626, 627, 628, and 629] were dated to the 11-13th, 2nd 1/2 12th, and 2nd 1/2 12th centuries.)
