Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6401 appears to be a leveling fill within cut 6402, which is located in southern extension of courtyard of the Byzantine house. Upon removal of context 6399 above, it became clear that cut 6402 truncates cut 6396, which means deposits were taken slightly out of order, but the sequence has now been clarified.
Soil is light yellowish brown clayey silt with ca. 40% inclusions (tile, stones). Removal of 6401 revealed more of reddish fill revealed in other parts of this area and a floor surface which had been previously uncovered.
Large amount of pottery and finds from this fill. Many amphora sherds, possibly from same vessel recovered in western part of 6401 near level of revealed floor.
In NE corner of 6401 removal revealed an oval feature an oval feature characterized by large amounts of lime plaster. Large chunks of plaster appeared and small ones with red paint on one side. Decision to dry sieve all the soil from this context because of large amount of pottery and finds. One coin 2009-98 recovered from sieve.
As removal of context 6401 continued, it became clear in this area that there were at least 3 superimposed surfaces, the top two of which at least have been truncated by later cuts. Also further revealed was more of a circular cut first exposed by removal of 6395. This circular cut appears to be truncated by wall 5285 and would have continued into room immediately to the south.
