Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 6417
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 6417
Area:   Nezi Field
Context Type:   Fill
Title:   fill
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1103
Context:   6417
Page:   0
Date:   2009/05/14
Stratum:   The soil was very ashy in some places; 10% inclusions of pottery, pebbles, and small pieces of tile. Less inclusions than 6415
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are now excavating context 6417- which covers the entire area under 6411 and 6415. At first, on the basis of looking at the scarp we believed that 6415 went underneath 6417, but then we realized that 6415 was actually laying on top of 6417. We are excavating this area now because it seems to be the next latest area in this area.
It should be noted that Panos will no longer be excavating south of 1025.72 because it is too difficult to get over to this edge of the bothros. We will be leaving this area, therefore, as a martyr.
Added note, 15-05-09, MH: However, Panos did take the martyr back, southward, about 0.20 m. See drawing for 6425.
At the end of this context, two different soils were noted: 1) A lighter, harder, flatter level with ash and 2) a soft, dark soil visible near the junction of walls 5519 and 5284, going north-south. This may be a foundation trench for wall 5284. This makes good sense with what was discovered in 2008 by JC and NA. Foundation trench 5471 to the west of wall 5284 was founded at a similar height to this one.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
