| Description: | The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt. | |
| Notes: | Context 6485 is a surface of compact earth in the western section of the room immediately west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It appears to be a shallow fill likely associated with floor 6477. It was truncated in antiquity by the two pits dug in the 1960s and by the foundation trench (5720) for wall 5724. This context (6485) produced one coin (2009-143) and a bone needle. The soil is dark yellowish brown clayey silt with approximately 30% inclusions (stone, bone, ceramic). Removal of context 6485 revealed in the east more of a compact earth surface (6484). In the southwest part of context 6485, its removal revealed another section of deep, inclusion-laden fill similar to 6481. Context 6485 produced several interesting small finds including large chunks of iron slag and a fragment of a crystal. We also appear to have polychrome whiteware from this deposit which would suggest a late 11th cen. Date. This could mean we have skipped the 12th century in this room which supports a hypothesis by GDRS. | |
