Description: | The soil color is dark greyish red. The soil compaction is loose. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | Cleaning of previous context 218, excavated 2007 The basic idea with this deposit is that it was excavated during the earlier excavations--suspicion settles on context 218, excavated in 2007--but perhaps not fully excavated, leaving a baulk (644) on the western side and the apse 539 on the east. The layer below this (tentatively, 702) may connect to this, but it has not been excavated yet. In any case, excavation of this layer revealed ash, stone, and tile fragments, without any particularly telling information for the purpose or creation of this deposit. An investigation into the notes of context 218 was unhelpful, and it appears 218 was closed even if it was not finished. In any case, 649 was cut off to the north at an artificial divide, which would become the south end of 709 and to the south by the curving in of baulk 644 meeting apse 539. It is clearly distinct from the brownish soil of the baulk and from the apse itself, while perhaps being equivalent to the fill of 709. It would be worthwhile to compare the contents of 709 and 649, since the former might reflect that 649 initially contained before its supposed excavation and backfilling.
