Stratum:   N/A. This basket records the masonry of a wall.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. Bottom slope of the context is uneven.
Notes:   Interpretation: This is the superstructure of a wall. We know this because we have the construction cut (B73) for the wall on its south side and so know at what level the ground was on the south side when the wall was constructed. The construction materials and technique also differ slightly between the superstructure (this basket) and the foundation (B67).
MASONRY: The wall is composed of rounded and subangular cobbles, tile fragments, rougly squared boulders. Large stones are used on the faces, the core of the wall is composed of smaller cobbles, coarse pebbles, and tile fragments. The boulders range from .20m to .41m by .27m by .25m. Most stones are unfinished. Less than 5% are roughly squared, and the wall is randomly coarsed. The bonding material is mud. The length (E-W) is 12.97m, width .57m, and height ranges from .08m to .55m. SOIL MATRIX: basically dark yellowish brown except for at the east end where decomposed organics gave the soil a darker color.
The top of the wall has 6 depressions resulting from the construction of B16 and B17 (concrete slabs for fence posts). These depressoins probably resulted from stone being dug away and removed in order to pour the concrete for the slabs. At 1010.5N and 276E the superstructure has completely collapsed, or been removed. This is precisely where the south edge of Amyx and Morgan's trial trench was dug in 1936. In their notes, however, they do not mention this wall at all.
The cut for the construction trench of the wall cuts B65 in B65's south side. There are two possibilities for explaining why the cut does not appear on the north side: 1) in the north face was constructed flush with the cut on the north side, and is therefore invisible. This would indicate that the wall must postdate the deposits to the wall's north; or 2) the wall predates the north deposits, which accumilated after the wall's construction. If the first option is correct, it is difficult to suggest which baskets are above and which are below the cut. Modern fencing (B16 and B17), deposit B5, and deposit B1 all overlie the extant top of the wall.
Billy and the younger Andreas began dismantling the superstucture at 12:30 on 03 May, beginning from the west. Kleomenis joined us shortly thereafter. One of the cobbles from the west end was roughly squared, and had a corner that was covered with a very hard substance (concrete? Industrial plaster?) and marked with gashes in said hard coating. See sketch on basket sheet for B64.
As the workmen removed the wall stones, the soil matrix within the was was dark yellowish brown sandy silt. As they progressed further east, there was an increating number of roots withing the soils matrix, and the soil became much darker (more rich in organic material?).
