Description:   The soil color is light greyish red. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Upon our excavation of 637, the northern region of our area lay exposed and uniform in appearance. We thus requested our pick-operators, Panos and Tasos Kakouros, to operate the aforementioned picks from the boundaries of our northern area, that is, wall 540 in the west, wall 420/pit 430 in the south, and the scarp edges to the north and east. The uniform fill of this area contained stones, tile, and bones and was dated by pottery to the Venetian period. It was cut by wall 420, which has been dated to the Ottoman period, which is perhaps reassuring. The layer itself appears to have been a general leveling fill designed to bring the entire area north of 420 and east of 540 to a more or less uniform level. For what purpose, however, we are unable to say. Iron lumps and vitrified ash was found, along with a small amount of charcoal. It is possible that these derived from this level, but it seems much more likely that they were pulled up when material was taken to create the leveling fill, given the large amount of iron lumps and charcoal found in lower levels.
The light greyish apperance of this area in contrast to the levels beneath it made it quite easy to separate it from those it overlay. Additionally, this layer was quite useful as establishing a clear boundary under which our entire northern region could be arranged, tying together some minor stratigraphic points.
Underneath was another large context of reddish soil - 663. Also a darker deposit adjacent to the north boundary of former Wall 420. We assigned this context 659. Under the eastern extent of 655 we found another dark layer that connected with another dark layer under wall 420 that in turn connected with the dark layer exposed under 651. Thus we assigned this giant dark layer stretching from pit 193 to the northern scarp of our area context 667.
