Notes:   N.B. Context number 6583 was skipped in 2009. For consistency, it is being used during the 2010 season.
Context 6583 is the fill from a circular pit located in the northern part of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It is truncated on its north side by wall 5725. An earlier Frankish pit (context 6232) was dug in the 1960s (notebook 235, bothros 9) and occupied a very similar position in the room. Pit 6583 appears to be distinct from the later pit however. It (pit 6583) was revealed by the removal of fill context 6528 which revealed the cut and the distinct ashy soil. The cut for this pit is labeled context 6655.
It is confusing that two separate pits would exist in the same location and date to different periods. However, it is likely that pit 6583 is the only actual pit. The one dug in the 1960s was an artificial pit created by the slumping of the layers above 6583. These layers would have cracked creating a false cut that the 1960s excavators interpreted as a pit. This crack was evident during the excavation of context 6528.
The soil is mixed. Mostly it is dark greyish black sandy silt with 5% inclusions (ash, charcoal, stone, tile, pottery, bone). Other soil is dark pinkish red sandy silt. The black soil is soft while the red soil is firm. Patches of another type of material which is white and has the consistency of sawdust also turned up.
In the northern part of pit 6583 its removal revealed the southern part of a built pithos (context 6519) first revealed in 2009. This built pithos is later than pit 6583 and would have truncated part of the pit. However, wall 5725 sits on top of the pithos meaning it cannot be removed. Thus, the pit is being dug out of stratigraphic order, but it is necessary in this instance.
One point of interest concerning pit pithos 6519 is that it was filled with large blocks in order to support wall 5725, a fact which became evident with the removal of 6583.
*However, the pottery coming out of pit 6583 is clearly Frankish in date indicating this pit should be related to the pit dug in the 1960s. This suggests that we overdug context 6528 and that the pit had a similar lens of fill to that layer.
