Stratum:   20% inclusions od coarse pebbles. Spherical cobbles, ceramics, carbonized material
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a dumped fill in the N-W corner of the room N-W of the courtyard in the Byz. House. The soil in context has changed but this is essentially the same dump with the same issues as 6607. We are still seeing a lot of large, well-preserved cooking sherds. The context will have to be continued on Tuesday since Monday is a holiday.
Tues, 9-6
Context continues to yield sherds of large cook pots. Also, the top of an amphora, which has been lying on its side with its top exposed in the W. side of the pit to the east, has been exposed and cleaned and photographed. Soil inside amphora will be collected along with amphora and sent to museum.
Given the number of cook pots and bones excavated from this context, it is now being thought that this area may have been a taverna with this context comprising an associated dump fill for the taverna.
We sieved the top portion of this context at 7mm, but soon went to 3mm after much egg shell and small bone and fish scales were found. Therefore, work slowed and we did not finish this context and will resume on Wednesday.
Coordinates for amphora: E 261.42, N 1037.27, top height 83.96, bottom height 83.61
Wed, 10/6
We have resumed excavating deposit 6612. Having obtained a large amount of similar materials from a dozen or so buckets of soil sieved at 3mm, we have elected to return to 7mm to speed up work. As we continue down in this fill, its dimensions are beginning to emerge more clearly. We have found a cut to the E which this deposit is filling (=cut 6633), and we have discovered that the deposit runs under wall 6130. Thus wall 6130 must be later and must cut deposit 6612. To the E and to the N, we hae exposed what appears to be Roman cement mortar in earlier walls upon which walls 5562 and 6130 were founded, although wall 6130 does not appear to be directly on top of the Roman wall below it, so the two walls may not actually have a construction relationship. We have gottena little nervous about digging so deep without changing contexts, but the soil composition does not seem to have changed, we are still seeing a lot of glass, bone, eggshell, etc., the pottery seems still to be primarily large sherds of cookware, and so we continue. It should be noted that there is some possibility of contaminaition from the surrounding contexts, particularly the rubble foundation of wall 5724. The overwhelmingly large amount of diagnostic cookware sherds should make such contamination easy to identify. WE are seeing more chunks of plaster and other building material, which may be crumbling in from the surrounding walls, but the soil matrix remains otherwise unchanged. We have now reached a part of the deposit with much less ash than we saw near the top. The soil still seems the same, but we are beginning to see the bottoms of the surrounding walls, which means the deposit must pre-date all of them. We therefore have to stop digging, even tough we think the deposit continues below all the walls and further down, and the diminishing ash gives us a good opportunity to change contexts. An unresolved question is what, if anything, this deposit has to do with the large whiteware deposits (6145 and 6129) in the E part of the room, ie E of wall 6130. At the top of this deposit, the pottery seems to have been contemporary with the whiteware, but stratigraphically this deposit must be earlier than the whiteware, so there is a possibility that we have simply overdug the context by a lot. The soil matrix never seems to have changed, but we were consistently concerned about the minor differences in pottery. Both the director (Guy Sanders) and the field director (Alicia Carter) raised similar concerns, though the director has not yet seen all of the pottery. So, if we have dug correctly, our deposit must predate walls 6130, 10111, and 5724, because it runs under all of them, which would mean that this deposit also predates the floor tha the whiteware deposit sa on, because that floor was contemporary with walls 6130 and 5562.
