Stratum:   pottery, tiles, bones, iron, shells, glass
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After Thanasis explored the area, we decided to remove the darker ashy layer that is bounded in places by red clay which was found in the excavation of context 642. We also are exploring to find the edges of this context. Context was left open and continued on 6 April 2012. Exploration across much of area between well head to W, Pier 573, and pit 642 failed to clarify edges of context; red, black, and white clay soils appeared mixed together especially in W half of context.
Later Interpretation (24 April 2012): We have taken this context out of the Harris matrix, as it represents cleaning in an attempt to clarify soil changes. Excavation was not systematic, but consisted of digging and scraping in various disconnected areas across the area marked on the top plan.
