Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   663 is the reddish surface that was largely covered by 655 and cut by 659. Excavation of it produced large amounts of charcoal patches and stones and tiles. The surface underneath is of great interest. On the west side, excavation has revealed a stone feature (wall 694) with a straight edge to the east and a circular interior.
The southern edge is flush with wall 420, and cut by it. To the west, 663 appears to overlay a layer of clay tiles that extend past the W edge of 663 for about 0.75 m; an almost completely grey ashy context is exposed just to the west of this. Under the SE section lies a tile filled surface which we have assigned the context number 688. A small section between 688 and stone feature 694 is filled with tiny pebbles; this we have named 693. The circular interior of stone feature 694 we have assigned 691. It has the appearance of a pit and some charcoal is visible. Directly to the south of 691 is a stone filled very poorly sorted surface that we have assigned 696. It would appear to be a continuation of the wall of 694 (note that this would not turn out to be the case, however, and it probably represents a stone fall from the wall itself). To the NE of the pit extends a tile filled surface which we have called 689. It abutts another tile filled surface to its south, except that we have assigned it the context 699 since the soil is markedly redder than 689. A small blackish ashy surface between 699 and 698 we have assigned the number 698.
Given that 663 covers so many different contexts of uneven levels we believe that it was a deliberate levelling fill. We expect that it was larger in extent before it was cut to the N, the E, and the S.
663 is cut by the black layer to the east (667), according to Panos. We therefore left a skin baulk against that edge, of around 0.2 m in width which will be removed upon the excavation of 667.
