Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   N.B. Context number 6656 was skipped in 2009. For constistency it is being used during the 2010 season.
Context 6656 is a pebble floor surface located in the central part of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It is truncated in the north by pit 6583 (cut 6655) and in the south by pit 5943 (cut 6326). The floor consists mainly of small, rounded-subrounded, spherical, medium pebbles. It would have covered the room but has been disturbed in several places.
The soil is dark reddish brown clayey silt with 70% inclusions (tile, pottery, stone). Much of the inclusions were well sorted, although there are some large pieces.
The removal of context 6656 revealed a surface, possibly a fill, which had already been partly revealed to the south by the removal of context 6528. Floor 6656 was relatively thick indicating it would have raised the level of this room quite substantially. However, as digging continued it began to appear that floor 6656 did not occupy the northern part of the room. While 6656 clearly overlays a stone and tile fill in the northern part of the room, it is only a thin covering and the fill appears to have a similar top elevation to the floor.
While context 6656 did not produce any bone, it did produce several large shell fragments. In the western part of the context a layer of black soil was revealed. We also came down on some large boulders sitting atop the revealed road surface in pit 5943.
It also appears now that this deposit had an associated cut (context 6708). This surface (6656) cut into a fill (now labeled context 6710). Both 6656 and 6710 appear to lie above a robbing trench for a feature identified in pit 5943.
