Context:   6686

Date:   2010/04/08
Stratum:   10% inclusions of tile fragments, pottery and plaster bits.
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the S. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   6686 is a large area of fill in the center of the room. In the 2009 season, we removed several deposits of fill above 6686 which were relatively the same but differed in amounts and type of inclusions and character of soil. 6686 is most likely another one of these fills, only covering a large area. 6686 also continues east to wall 10087 and, along this wall, was cut by pier foundation trench 6204 and 1960s excavation trench. To the west, 6686 is cut by 6274, also a pier foundation trench. To the north, 6686 is cut by the wall foundation trench 6682 and the 1960s excavation trench. To the south, 6686 is cut by the large cutting action 6678.
6686 continues to go down, sill firmly packed, but now darker. The light color of the upper portions was due to its exposure to the elements over the last year. Thanassis continued digging west of the original opening context because the soil was the same there. This was the small strip extending southwest of the main larger context area.
6686 is coming down on a hard white surface on the south that extends east-west across the entire context. This white surface is probably a floor; there is evidence for burning from a thin ash deposit that appears to continue under wall 10095. The wall and he cut for the wall cut the ash deposit. We closed the context because it extends under the other contexts towards the well to the west.
