Title:   Leveling Fill for External Surface
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1104
Context:   6696
Page:   0
Date:   2010/04/09
Lot:   Lot 2010-002
Stratum:   15% inclusions: small pebbles, small stones (avg. ca. 4-6 cm.), small lenses of calcium carbonate, tile, pottery, organic materials (bone, shell, carbonized olive pit)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   We are excavating 6696 in order to determine the relationship between three disparate areas - the area of 6696, the area to the South (= 5531), and the area to the East (= 5740, 5729, 5594). Optically, the three areas are similar -- hard-packed, compact surfaces, with horizontal tiles and medium-small sized pebbles. The working hypothesis is that these areas represent an external floor surface that was later cut by wall 5678, robbing trench 5802, pithos 5504, and pits 5714, 5629, 5734, and 5595. We hope that the excavation of 6696 and the other areas will clarify the use of this area subsequent to the level of the marble tile floor and North-South wall 5677.
The top of 6696 was extremely compact, probably because it was an external surface and because it has been exposed since 2008. Below this thin crust, however, the soil became loose and crumbly, light reddish-brown in color, and had lots of inclusions of small pebbles, small stones, broken tile, pottery, calcium carbonate, and some organic material. It appears to be a leveling fill for an external or outdoor surface. The appearance from the North and South scarps is uniformily heterogeneous with no distinct stratum until th emarble tile floor 5710 and concrete subfloor.
We were going to change contexts after the removal of the upper compact floor surface, but due to a miscommunication, we had already begun digging the fill below. When we move to the area to the South (= 5531), we will excavate it as two contexts.
The leveling fill lies directly on top of the marble tile floor. We have found more of the tiles along the Northern edge of the area, as well as extending Eastwards from the SW corner (running parallel to the 12th c. rubble wall 5678). The tiles are composed of white and blue marble, some laid in an opus sectile pattern. In some areas, specifically in the North-East and Eastern sections, we have discovered a slightly more compact stratum directly over the marble floor (it is possible that we broke through this stratum to the West, or that the stratum is irregular). We will excavate the more compact soil as a new context.
