Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   Context 6711 is a stratum of loose, reddish brown soil that stretches from the corner of walls 5677 and 5622 to the East, up to where robbing trench 5802 cuts the area, and extending North to the built pithos and the rubble wall 5678 to the East of the pithos. 6711 is softer than the fill 6705 above it and slightly darker in color. Underneath 6711, we can still trace the concrete subfloor of the marble floor. Our objective with digging 6711 is to delineate the concrete subfloor and understand the original extent of the area of the marble tile floor.
The concrete subfloor itself is reddish in color when first exposed, but turns white after exposure to the sun for long periods. The concrete contains lots of very small pebbles and has an irregular surface. It is now clear that the concrete subfloor is the same "hard, white surface" that was uncovered in 2008 along the edges of the pithos. The excavators from 2008 record that underneath context 5515 (a circular cutting around the pithos) and underneath 5481 and 5486 (the smaller circular cutting to the South-East of the pithos) they found a hard, white, pebbly surface -- this is surely the concrete sublfoor. The concrete sublfoor does not have its own context number.
As we traced the subfloor to the North, along the East edge of the area (to the East of the pithos), we uncovered a few more of the marble tiles. As we traced the subfloor to the South, we found a cut, running in an irregular East-West line. Within the cut, there is lots of hardened lime, small rocks, tile, and pottery. The cut appears to be a foundation trench for the first phase of East-West wall 5622. It is now clear that in the first phase, wall 5562 does not bond with North-South wall 5677; only in their second phases is there a physical bond between the two walls.
In closing the context we have exposed the marble tile floor, where it remains, the concrete subfloor, where the marbles are missing, and the foundation trench for EW wall 5562. We are not excavating the cut for the foundation trench for wall 5562 at this time, but are moving to the East, near NS walls 5394 and 5430. The foundation trench cut is indicated on the plan by a broken line.
