Stratum:   Boulders ~30 cm. pottery, glass, tiles, course and fine pebbles ~10 cm., coins, bones, inclusions 40 %
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   After cleaning the white layer in context 669 NW of pit 642, we found its boundary points with the red clay layer. We are now removing the white ash layer that has more boulders and tiles than there were in the cleaning of context 669. Soil against wall 450 is more yellow in color. Patches of carbon appeared along N edge of context (See soil sample 1) near large stone abutting wall 540 which may be a continuation of wall to E (420) which has been removed. Alternatively, another buttressing stone (See structure 573). Yellow soil by wall 540 is confined to S of large stone. Sieved 5 buckets mostly N of stone and found glass and carbon. Switched to 100% sieving, found bronze coin #20 in sieve, iron bloom w/ sherd attached recovered from E portion of context (260.18 E, 1009.86 N, 86.61 El). Recovered highly vitrified object (ca. 5 x 3, vitirified one side only, thin (< 1 cm. wide) but uneven surface, from near large stone ( ). Stone is part of wall/structure - robbing trench on either side?
Coin #19 found in excavation before sieving occurred (El: 86.73, E: 263.09, N 1010.81). 3 buckets of pottery.
In carbon sorting we found a possible seed. Some carbon pieces were greater than 1 cm.
Also two large flat fragments of white marble (both 3.6 cm. thick, 17X16 and 10 X15 cm.)
25 April 2012: 2009 notebooks record a 'pile' of stones running E-W along the line of our robbing trench - from the SW edge of pier 573 (ca. 260.20 E, 1010.90 N). east to approximately 262.50 E, between 1010 and 1011 N. These stones were removed in 2009 as context 448.
