Stratum:   10% inclusions: small pebbles, pottery, tile, small rocks, small hardened clumps of clay, small fragement of obsidian; semi-compact soil
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   Context 6733 is a compact clay surface extending across the area between NS walls 5394 and 5431, from just North of EW wall 5562, and ending on a SW-NE diagonal line approximately 3/4 North of wall 562. It was uncovered during the 2008 excavations of the area, below context 5413. We are excavating this surface now because three pits (6726, 6728, and 6731) extend below it and it is impossible to continue digging the pits. We do not yet understand how the three pits, which all seem to cut the clay surface, extend below, and how they relate to the clay surface.
The clay surface runs directly against walls 5394 and 5431, but does not meet wall 5562. Underneath the clay surface, we have uncovered a softer soil, with flecks of charcoal and calcium carbonate within it - it seems to be the same as the soil with pits 6726, 6728, and 6731. It is possibly part of the leveling fill for the clay surface, or a loose sublfoor. It is possible that what we interpreted as three pits and cuts in the clay surface were actually places where either the clay surface was not laid, or where the clay surface was disturbed by tree roots and/or insects and animals -- these are two possible explanations. See the top plan for 6733 for a drawing of the clay surface and three pits. See notes for contexts 6726 and 6735 for more details about the "pits" and the soil.
