Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   Context 6739 is a loose soil with lots of large inclusions of tiles, pottery, and small to medium sized rocks. It was revealed by the excavation of 6735 directly above it, which was semi-compact and had smaller inclusions. Context 6739 might be a leveling or dumped fill, whereas 6735 functioned more as a subfloor of sorts for the clay surface above.
In the NW corner of context 6739 we have come down on part of an ashy layer, possibly part of an ash pit. In the 2008 excavations, they found several ash pits and ashy layers in the area between NS wall 5561 and NS wall 5430/5431, so it is not surprising to find one here. The digging of 6739 has also revealed three distinct areas beneath it: a semi-compact layer with flecks of calcium carbonate to the South, a very soft soil with lots of pottery, bone, and tile inclusions in the center of the area, and a semi-compact layer with flecks of calcium carbonate in the North. The two compact areas in the South and North are identical and have possibly been cut by the softer soil. In the North compact area, two tiles have fallen directly on top (neither complete). The ashy pit in the NW corner possibly cuts the compact surface, or is, more likely, an ash lens within the softer soil that has reappeared along the Northern boundary of the area. See the sketch in the excavation notes for a bottom plan of 6739, showing the four distinct areas (two areas of semi-compact soil, two areas of loose, soft soil) and ash lens.
