Context:   6749

Stratum:   5% inclusions: some tile, pottery, small lenses of charcoal and calcium carbonate; semi-compact
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   Context 6749 is a semi-compact stratum in the Southern area bounded by NS walls 5394 and 5431 and EW wall 5562. It is distinct from the soft soil with lots of inclusions that is directly to the North of this context. It is the same semi-compact stratum as context 6744. The two semi-compact strata alternate with strata of loose soil with lots of inclusions (see sketch in notes for 6739, when the four alternating strata were revealed). We are excavating 6749 now in order to continue digging the softer soil that continues underneath it (= 6747). This context is probably a natural accumulation of materials in the corner contained by NS walls 5394 and 5431 and EW wall 5562. Upon removing context 6749, we found more of the soft soil full of inclusions that characterizes 6747.
Additionally, the removal of 6749 revealed a line of stones, oriented E-W, that might form a wall or other feature. The stones run at a slight angle from EW wall 5562 and are adjacent to it, but do not abut it. This might be a continuation of EW wall 10091 (directly East of NS wall 5431, outside the parameters of our trench and drawings). The stones bond with NS wall 5431, but at this level, do not meet NS wall 5394 (perhaps they continue West to wall 5394 in a lower course?). This EW spur wall is now numbered 6764.
