Director of Excavations Dr. G.D.R. Sanders, having spent some time looking at apse 539, suggested that the apse might indeed be two apses, that is, the true apse 539 and a second apse running around the outside of it, which is this context. While admittedly skeptical, we directed our hard-smoking, keen-eyed master of picking operations Panos Kakouros and his equally astute if less nicotined brother Tasos Kakouros to remove the wall in question. Teaching us the risks of doubting DoE GDR Sanders, PhD, the two apses do indeed appear to be two separate apses. This apse (the outer one) seems to postdate the inner apse, though their exact relationship is difficult to determine. A layer of soil running under part of this context does also run under the inner apse. However, excavations underneath context 665 show that the pit 704 extended under this apse.
The boundaries between this context and its nearby fellows were fairly clear. The wall rose above the nearby contexts, and was a fairly thin wall, thus not requiring a serious foundation trench or similar leveling operations. Indeed, it seems to have been put up without much preparatory work, built from local loose stones, with dirt packed in for bonding. Compared to the much more impressively worked and proportioned stones in N of Nezi or in Team White's region, or the much more regular coursing seen elsewhere in both areas, this wall does not leave much to recommend itself to architecture enthusiasts.
