Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are excavating context 6772 in order to clarify our understanding of the compact surface to the North and to see if we can delineate the upper surface of NS wall 6765 and its Western face. The soil is relatively loose and light yellowish brown in color.
As we remove 6772 we are coming down on the Southern extent of the compact surface. Between the compact surface and EW wall 6764, an ashy layer, similar to that in the NW corner, has appeared. It has an uneven surface, slumping down in the center. The compact surface to the North is similarly uneven, although not to the same extent; it slumps slightly to the East and South (probably as the ashy layer, which runs underneath at least part of it, settled). This entire area, to the West of NS wall 6765, is a mixture of soft soil, ashy soil, and compact soil, filled in alternating dumps and slumping into one another. The compact surface to the North and the ashy layer underneath are among the only distinct strata.
Between NS wall 6765, EW wall 6764, and the ashy and compact strata, the soil continues to be loose and filled with tile and small stones. This would seem to indicate that NS wall 6765 is only about 24 cm. thick. Before we can continue with the loose soil alongside NS wall 6765 and EW wall 6764, we must remove the compact surface and the ashy layer (compact surface = 6777).
