Description: | Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light greyish white. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | Context 6778 is a layer of almost pure ash, with small occassional flecks of charcoal and yellow clay. It is located in the NW corner of the area, alongside the East face of NS wall 5394. The ashy directly overlies several flat tiles that have been placed somewhat within the compact surface 6777. The ash also reappears below the tiles and below the compact surface (hence our decision to excavate 6777 first). A sample of this ash was taken during the excavation of 6747 (it was believed at the time that the ash was a small lens within the fill of context 6747). The combination of ash, horizontal tiles, and the compact clayey surface suggests that this was a hearth feature. Likewise, the yellow clay that is visible below some of the tiles suggests a heat-proofing mechanism of some sort. Upon removing the ash, we discovered more tiles, both flat and slightly convex, laid horizontally. Some of these tiles continue under the later phase of NS wall 5394, indicating that the hearth was installed before the second phase, and might be associated with the first phase. We had not yet dismantled the second phase of wall 5394 because it is not absolutely clear what is part of the early phase and what is part of the later phase. Only two small sherds of pottery were recovered from this layer.
