Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 6790 is a triangular baulk of ashy soil, revealed during the 2008 excavations (contexts 5382 + 5383). In 2008, they were unsure of the nature of this triangular area (see notes for context 5407). We are excavating it now in order to investigate what is going on, on the West side of NS wall 6789. We are also hoping to clarify the relationship between the area to the West of NS wall 6789, and the area to the East, between NS walls 6789 and 5431.
The soil of 6790 is greyish-brown in some areas and reddish-brown in others; the inclusions are the same throughout: small pebbles and rocks, tile, pottery, bone, small flecks of charcoal and calcium carbonate. At the bottom of this context, in the North, we are coming down on a hard reddish-brown compact stratum. In the Southern area of 6790, we are coming down on a very loose, ashy layer that appears to continue futher to the South. In 2008, they found several ashy deposits in this area, so the ashy stratum here might be related to those deposits just to the South. The ashy stratum cuts the hard reddish-brown layer, so that will be excavated first (= 6791).
