Formation (cont.): The foundation has largely collapsed east of 275.80E, to beyond the eastern extent of the excavation area. This position corresponds to the south edge of Amyx and Morgan's 1936 trial trench.
EXCAVATION NOTES:
The soil matrix is very dark yellowish brown sandy silt. The soil is siltier and less yellowish, more pure brown, towards the east.
The fill of the construction trench was excavated with the foundation of the wall because the cut was only 5 - 10 cm from the wall on the south side and flush against the wall on the north side, and thus difficult to isolate.
Elevations, starting at the west:
Top--87.42, 87.50, 87.43, 87.55, 87.42, 87.38.
Bottom--87.09, 87.11, 87.11, 87.10, 87.03, 87.08, 87.00, 86.98, 86.94.
Materials used in wall foundation: Field stones = mostly angular, rounded, and sub-rounded cobbles with a few sub-rounded boulders. On average the foundation stones are smaller than those of the superstructure. They are roughly hewn, and set in random courses with random levelling courses where needed (thin restangular stones laid flat with long sides along wall face). The foundation stones are more evenly faced than the superstructure stones; but like the superstructure, the core of the foundation contains tile frags and smaller stones (cobbles and coarse pebbles). Mud is used as the bonding agent. Dimensions: L. 16.28 m through excavation area (wall continues outside excavation area to east and west); avg. D. 0.45 m.
