Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We started excavating 6847 because we understood from cleaning 6843 that the fill of pit 6840 continues down and that the bothros had not been completely excavated in 2008. We noticed that the majority of the soil is a dark reddish brown, but there are areas of ashy soil and white soil. \there was no clear and distinct boundary between the different soil patches, so we are excavating all the soil as one context. At this point, we think that the small areas of different soil can be accounted for by the dumping of different materials, possibly at the same time, as would have taken place in a rubbish pit. Guy Sanders mentioned that if we are finding reddish soil, we might be coming upon disintegrated mud brick. Charcoal fragments have been found throughout. We speculate that the pit may be a refuse dump or a basement or cellar for storage. GS thinks it might be late 11th c. based on cursory examination of pottery.
