Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   6867 is an extension of the context 6864 to the west. The woil is full of sherds, tile, pebbles, and cobbles. We extended the context when we realized that the soil was the same as 6864. We stopped after the workmen became concerened that the blocks lining the drain might collapse on them. The context continued under the blocks lining the drain 6827 leading James Herbst to to remark that is was shoddy construction seeing that the water cut away at th esoil under the drain's lining. Although we reached the sloping bedrock on the north and south sides we did not reach the bottom of the bedrock between the north and south sides. The excavation revealed a half column lying in the middle of the drain to the west, outside of the part of the drain that was capped before we removed the cap. This half column might have been used to block the drain, although ultimately the block's function is unclear.
We ceased excavation of the drain 6827 at this point. We hypothesize that due to the presence of moist, silty clay (6854) in the eastern part of the drain, which was also the capped part of the drain, and because none of that silty clay was found in the western part of the drain (6832) that the drain was stopped up at some point. Most likely 6832 represents the fill from that stopping up project.
