In excavation this season, we determined that Cut 687 (and its fill 684) actually represent a robbing of wall 366 rather than a foundation. The better we understand phasing in this area - combined with the fact that there is no wall preserved here, this cut is quite a bit wider than the preserved stretch of the wall itself and extends beyond it to the south in line with wall 306, and the cut originated at a higher elevation than the occupational layers likely associated with wall 366 in the late 11th century - suggest to us that 687 should be understood as a robbing trench instead. We have identified a narrow strip of what does seem to be a foundation trench along the north side of wall 366 as Cut 1161; the soil deposit within it (1160) contained no pottery but did expose the bottom of the wall.
