Description:   The soil color is reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   The context superficially looks the same as 689 in terms of colour, inclusions, and composition. Compare pottery dates.
We chose to excavate 688 and 693 as two different contexts, even though there is an extremely good possibility that they are the same, since the one (693) appeared to have more stones than the other. We set our pick-operators to excavate in this area after the removal of context 682 revealed the area to the N and E of wall 694. In this area, which ran on until it met the deeper reddish layer 725 in the east, there was a sort of fan in that direction, with its southern boundary fixed at wall 420, the western boundary at wall 694, and slowly fanning out to the north as it ran east. Since this also entails a slight shift in elevation, we might be seeing a sort of slow slide of material towards the level represented by 725, but this is difficult to say. In any case, it would seem that all this material to the E of wall 694 (that is, 693 and 688) are the same, with differences between the two accounted for the formation of this spread, radiating perhaps from the area of wall 694. This layer was initially impressive for its tile concentration, which we had hoped to associate with what we thought was a kiln or oven structure, but which turned out to be a wall and pit (that is, 694 and 691). One interesting question remaining, however, is whether 688 and 689 are the same context, perhaps overlain by 694 and cut by 691, but continuing originally. This appears to be the case, but thanks to the interventions between the two, this cannot be plainly seen during excavation itself.
