Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   6912 is a fill above a flat surface, possibly a floor. It is directly under 6911. It is visually similar to contexts 6996 and 6998, the areas to the west and southwest of 6912, but separated by 5802 and 5678. All these surfaces are compact, but with loose soil with tile pottery and pebble inclusions. We hypothesize that these originally formed the same external floor surface, and are excavating to determine the feasibility of the idea. Given the scattered marble tiles found in 6698, it seems possible that the whole western area was covered by a floor, and we are digging a leveling fill. Since 6912 is of uneven elevation, it is possible that the digging activity for the robbing trenches 6900, 5802, and 5678 together with bothros 6840, may have caused settling and shifting of the surface. Since we have found no marble tile in 6912, it now seems unlikely that the marble tile floor continued beyond robbing trench 5802. It is possible that this floor was roughly contemporaneous with the marble floor (below 6705), but an outdoor surface composed of pebble and tile, since the fill above both areas looks the same. It is now apparent that the context directly below 6912 is partly made up of a compact floor surface with large pebbles and tile and a softer, more reddish area with large tile inclusions. We will excavate the latter area (6819) to see if the more compact surface continues underneath. The bottom was very uneven, so we took several bottom elevations. It is not clear that 6912 is cut by a cut (6920).
